If you are attending Avalon on the weekend schedule, then you will come in
to Gainesville every other weekend. You can drive or fly in Friday evening
and leave Sunday evening. There are many hotels and motels to choose from.
When a major event is taking place, hotels can fill up, so you may want to
make reservations a few months ahead of time to be certain that there are rooms
available.
If you are attending Avalon on the full-time day schedule or part-time weekend
schedule and are moving to this area, then most likely you will want to rent
an apartment. At this time there is no housing provided by the school. Another
possibility is renting a home and sharing expenses with other students. This
can be less expensive than renting an apartment. We will work with you to help
make your stay here as comfortable and affordable as possible.
In terms of expense, the worst case scenario is renting an apartment. The web
site www.gainesville-rent.com has
information on apartments available. From this web site we assembled the information
given below, which was current as of January, 2003. The apartments are listed
in the approximate order of distance from the school.
Note that Avalon is located in the very attractive northwest section of Gainesville,
and all of the apartments listed below are in the northwest area as well, and
all are very comfortable, and many have a swimming pool, exercise room, and
other amenities. Most of the apartments listed are "upscale" apartments
and not far from subdivisions with very expensive homes. There are other apartments
in Gainesville that are less expensive but still comfortable and safe. The
only apartments listed below in this lower price range is Pinewood (and Assoc
Realty, which we have not seen). Although having fewer amenities and not as
beautiful as the other apartments, Pinewood is clean, safe, comfortable, and
reasonably attractive. There are apartments near SW 34th Street and the Butler
Plaza shopping center on Archer Road that are in this less expensive price
range. The drive from these apartments is about 15 to 20 minutes, while the
drive from the apartments listed below ranges from about 2 minutes to 10 minutes,
from the school.
